"Moto" is a word meaning the location of something/where someone or something is, and is usually written as in hiragana as もと, or occasionally in kanji as 元 but apparently, it can also be written as 下, though this seems to be very, very rare. In the song, the singer reads it as "moto". However, "beneath" (下) is usually pronounced "shita". It's 空の微笑みの下, which, based on the kanji, is "beneath the sky's smile". Translator's note: So the very last line gave me some trouble. Japanese->English translation of "Hikari to Kage" by miimi.
